SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -

Construction officially began this week at the 20-year-old Santa Rosa Park in San Luis Obispo. The $2.2 million project has been in the works for several years.

It’s a place that brings many skateboarders in the community together.

Skateboarder and an advocate for the SLO Skate park project, Eli Stein, said “You start seeing people once or twice a week and I have really good friends just from skating here.”

Stein and other skateboarders in the community have been working to upgrade the park for many years.

Recreation supervisor Dave Setterlund  oversees programs at the park.

Setterlund said, “It's going to be a completely different park.”

The SLO Skate park project has been in planning  since 2006 .

The majority of the funds will come from measure Y, a half-cent city sales tax.
