SMV Humane Society Gets Major Financial Grant

There's plenty to bark about at the sprawling, new Santa Maria Valley Humane Society adoption facility and clinic on West Stowell Road.

The SMV Humane Society’s decade-long capital fundraising campaign to complete the new $3.9 million pet adoption facility and spay and neuter clinic is receiving $300,000 from the San Luis Obispo-based Hind Foundation.

“This is the largest grant that our organization has every received”, says Santa Maria Valley Humane Society Executive Director Jill Tucker, “it will enable us to build the last, major component of this overall project, which is our third and final kennel wing.”

The Hind Foundation, based in San Luis Obispo, funds community-based projects and programs that encourage people to work together and build an enduring legacy for future generations.

“This new kennel wing is going to more than double our capacity for our dog adoption program which is fantastic and greatly needed in this community”, Tucker says.

The Hind Foundation grant is expected to ease what has become a growing burden at Santa Maria Valley shelters from pet over population, mainly from the over-breeding of pit bulls and chihuahuas, and pet abandonment.

“Really what we've been struggling with over the years is trying to address the challenges the Santa Maria Valley has with respect to animal over population, way too many dogs and cats flooding the area shelters”, Tucker says, “to have this kind of capacity where we are not only going to have the current two kennel buildings which offer a total of 22 indoor outdoor spaces, you add another 26, we've got 48, with that kind of capacity we are really going to be able to make a dent in the needs of this community and relieving the overcrowding at the county facility and moving these animals through our adoption program.”

The Santa Maria Valley Humane Society looks forward to announcing completion of the final dog kennel wing later this year.
