The Santa Barbara Zoo and a professional skateboarder were among the winners of the 10th annual Spirit of Service awards.
A program called Looking Good Santa Barbara honors people and businesses for reducing waste and cleaning up their community.
The zoo was recognized for composting leftovers in its animal kitchen and recycling throughout the grounds.
Pro skater Sean Bolis was honored for encouraging kids to clean up the Santa Barbara Skate Park. In return, Bolis offered them free tips and lessons.
The Valle Verde Retirement Community was also honored for using reclaimed water and reducing waste on its 66-acre campus.
A member of the nutrition department at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital was honored for waste reduction. Kris Warner was nominated by friends who say she puts on rubber gloves and digs through the compost bins to make sure trash does not get in.
Alice San Andres-Calleja won the Clean Community award for taking care of her Mesa neighborhood. She also publishes a monthly paper that promotes cleaning up graffiti and litter.
The president of the Milpas Business Association also won a Clean Community award. When Alan Bleecker accepted his award, he pulled out a framed photo of Justin Beiber he found in the trash while dumping cigarette butts found in front of businesses.
