Students Converge on Isla Vista for Deltopia

Out of Towners converge on Isla Vista.

ISLA VISTA, Calif. -

Deltopia gets its name from Del Playa, the street in Isla Vista where the people will be gathering this weekend and utopia.  But it's far from perfection. The unsanctioned event that began as Floatopia before it was kicked off the beach has turned into a giant street party that is known to get out of control.

On the eve of Deltopia last year Giselle Ayala disappeared.  The 18-year-old Cal Poly San Luis Obispo student was found dead in the ocean off Campus Point the next day. Friends believe she fell to her death from the Isla Vista cliffs.

They plan to stay sober and remind students they are not invincible.

It may be harder to party this spring. The area near UCSB has new street lights plus temporary lights and surveillance cameras.  Some students don't like the thought of people watching.  But UCSB and the sheriff's department support the effort to promote safety and prevent illegal activity.

Students thought they were watching a meth bust on Camina Del Sur Friday, but it turned out to be underage-drinking arrests.

A home rented by a number of students was fenced off, but that didn't stop roommates from being ticketed for playing music.

They hope to fight the ticket, saying they thought they were allowed to play music as long as there wasn't a crowd.

A Facebook page created to promote the event had  11,700 guests acknowledge they plan to attend.

UCSB students blame social media for attracting thousands of people from out of town.
