Students Get Around Music Ordinance With Silent Disco

Isla Vista party uses phone app and DJs to hold silent disco

ISLA VISTA, Calif. -

Before, during and after Deltopia officers handed out tickets for loud music that could be heard from the street.

This week, one student complained to UCSB's chief of campus police about getting a $400 ticket for playing music three minutes after the midnight music deadline.

Friday night students found a way around the ordinance by hosting what they call a silent disco. They asked friends to bring charged cellphones and headphones so they could log onto wireless networks playing music they like to dance to.

Tyler Fish and Sean Wilczak hope the trend catches on. They don't want to have parties and worry about music volume or the music curfew.
