SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -

A suspected boat thief has been arrested by the Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol after taking the Double Dolphin catamaran from its dock.

The crime occurred about 7:30 a.m.

That's when another boater in the area saw the well known vessel floating on its own through the harbor waters towards Marina One, a short distance from its normal dock at the Santa Barbara Sailing Center.

The vessel was boarded by Harbor Patrol Officer Karl Halamicek who recognized the suspect as someone he has dealt with in the last two months for stealing a smaller vessel.

Halamicek arrested Phillip Conway who was inside the vessel.

There was an estimated $1000. to $3000. worth of damage to the interior of the vessel including broken doors and equipment.

Conway has been booked into jail with bail set at $500,000.

The Double Dolphin is back at the Sailing Center where it was already going through renovations and was set to go back into operation prior to this theft.

This 50-foot catamaran is one of the more prominent vessels in the Santa Barbara waters for whale watching trips, and special events.
