Santa Barbara Police Department released the following information:
A two-month narcotics investigation culminated with the arrest of James Robert Begg, age 50, of Santa Barbara, for possession of heroin for sale, sale of heroin, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Begg was dealing heroin on Santa Barbara's Westside. In November 2013 detectives from the Santa Barbara Police Department's Narcotics Unit initiated an investigation into Begg's narcotics activities.
On January 10, 2014 the detectives obtained a search warrant for Begg's residence on the 1900 block of Gillespie Street and on the morning of January 15, 2014 conducted surveillance of Begg's residence in preparation for executing the search warrant.
While doing so they observed Begg sell heroin from his house. At 10:10 a.m. the detectives observed Begg leave his residence, riding away on a bicycle. They stopped him on the 1500 block of Dutton Avenue and searched his residence.
There they found 6.7 grams of heroin valued at $400.00, $496.00 in cash, and drug paraphernalia including a scale, packaging material, and syringes.
When interviewed Begg denied selling heroin, but stated that he gives it away to people to help those suffering from withdrawal sickness.
Begg was arrested on the aforementioned charges and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail with a bail amount of $30,000.00. He is expected to appear in Santa Barbara County Superior Court on January 30 for a preliminary hearing setting.
