Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce Dudley announced Tuesday the following charges have been filed against Desmond Louis Edwards: Mayhem, resisting executive officer and assault upon a police officer.
The 17-year-old from Los Angeles also faces special allegations of causing great bodily injury and committing a serious/violent felony offense and will be charged as an adult. He is being held in custody on $100,000 bond. If convicted of all counts Edwards could face up to 12 years in prison.
Edwards is accused of swinging a backpack full of alcohol bottles and hitting a UCSB police officer in the head. The impact split open the officer's forehead, requiring 20 stitches.
Many consider Edwards' alleged act as the flashpoint to Saturday night's riots in Isla Vista during Deltopia, which was attended by an estimated 25,000 people. His alleged attack and arrest drew a huge, unruly crowd that eventually escalated into a stand-off with police and sheriff's deputies and rioting.
Edward was in handcuff and shackles when he sat in a Santa Barbara County courtroom for the first time. No family members appeared. Edward is being held in Santa Maria. He is due back in court Thursday, but attorneys said his arraignment will probably be postponed again.
