Ventura police are still looking for the three men who shot and killed Zach Lee.
The incident happened Sunday when officers responded to a call about a fight in progress on West Harrison Avenue in Ventura.
When police arrived they found Lee suffering from a gunshot wound to his head. He was then taken to Ventura County Medical Center where he died a day later.
Officers believe that the assailants were gang members.
Lee was a Ventura native who was in the process of changing his life around. He had been drug and alcohol free for nearly two years and was about to graduating from an addictive disorders studies program at Oxnard College.
Becca Porter, Lee's teacher at Oxnard College, said he made such a positive impact on the program.
"He was an excellent student, an awesome friend, and one of the most helpful humans I have ever met," she said.
