Westmont Students Haiti

Santa Barbara, Calif. -

For some college students, spring break is a chance to hit the beach and unwind from the sress of college life,

But 16 economics and business students from Westmont headed to Haiti over their Spring Break to help local entrepreneurs launch 7 small businesses. Their belief was simple- sharing knowledge and supporting people in need would help jumpstart one of the world’s weakest economies.

In terms of struggling economies, there are few places as impoverished as Haiti, a country with close to 80 percent of the population living below the poverty line

Crawford Ifland, who participated in the trip, said “It might not have been your typical Spring Break, but being able to use our education and our knowledge to help others was very rewarding.”

Through their work, they were able to help launch 7 local small businesses in Haiti, including three moped taxi services, two used clothing stores, one food stand and one bridal boutique.

Jake Allbaugh said “We have a global vision here at Westmont, and we like to share what we have been given.”

Crawford Ifland: “It wasn’t the same as being on a beach but it was very rewarding.”
