Wind, Waves Prompted Kayaker Rescue Near Goleta

Kayaker Rescued

GOLETA, Calif. -

An 18-year-old UCSB freshman fell out of his kayak in the ocean about a mile off Del Playa Drive and had to be rescued.

Strong winds and waves prevented the man from getting back in his kayak. Swells reached 8 to 10 feet high.

It happened around 3:40 p.m. In total, three kayakers were in the water. Only was was in distress.

Santa Barbara County Fire Department sent two Jet Skis out to pick up the man and escort the two other kayakers to Goleta Beach.

The 18-year-old was taken to Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital for hypothermia. He was in the water for 45 minutes to one hour before rescue arrived.

He was wearing a life jacket but not a wet suit.
