Jack Elway, the 24-year-old son of Denver Broncos general manager and Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, has pleaded not guilty to charges that he assaulted his girlfriend and pulled her out of a car by her hair.

John Albert Elway III was charged with disturbing the peace and assault after the Saturday incident near a college campus in downtown Denver.

He was scheduled to appear in Denver County Court on Thursday morning, but the hearing was canceled after he entered his plea on Wednesday, according to the Denver Post.

He posted a $550 bond after being arrested at his father's home. A jury trial has been set for Aug. 6.

The younger Elway allegedly ripped out pieces of the woman's hair and pushed her to the ground, causing her to scrape her knees.

The newspaper reported that the couple, who have been dating for a year, got into an argument around 1:40 a.m. Saturday while driving, the police report said.

Jack Elway was a standout quarterback at Cherry Creek High School in Englewood, Colo., before going to Arizona State. As a redshirt freshman quarterback in spring 2009, he elected to leave the Sun Devils' football program.

The younger Elway lives in Newport Beach, Calif., according to his Facebook page.
