Santa Barbara High School saw both the boys and girls post easy wins in first round action.

Amber Melgoza and Desirea Coleman picked up right where they left off after winning a CIF title.

The two combined to score 36 of the Dons 40 first half points as Santa Barbara went on to wallop Shafter High School in the opening round of the State Tournament Division 3 Southern California Region.

Melgoza scored the first ten points of the game and the Dons led 14-0 before Shafter scored. It was 20-5 after one quarter as Santa Barbara used a press to force several turnovers.

The sophomore Melgoza scored 22 of her game-high 28 points before halftime and the senior Coleman tallied 14 of her 16 points before the break as the Dons built up a 40-14 halftime lead. Those two combined to score 54 points last Saturday in the Dons CIF Division 3AA championship.

The Dons will host La Canada on Saturday night at 6 p.m.

In Division 1, Ventura lost at home to Hanford 53-36 to end their incredible season at 29-3. Ventura won a CIF title last Saturday as well. "They immediately just became part of the family," said Henning. "They were very friendly with all the guests we had coming over."

But things changed when Daisy and Duke got loose. They liked chasing cats.

"Dogs are pack animals and that is their default instinct," said Henning. "If they are bonded or litter mates, it intensifies that. They would get out of the confines of our house or yard and this instinct would come to the surface."
