American short-track speedskater J.R. Celski fell short of a medal in the 1,500-meter race in Sochi, Russia, on Monday.

Instead, Charles Hamelin of Canada took first place in the finals, earning his third career Olympic gold. China's Han Tianyu took silver and Russia's Viktor Ahn won bronze.

Celski, a 23-year-old Federal Way, Wash., native, finished in fourth place, one spot behind his bronze-medal performance in the event from the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

He also won a bronze medal in 2010 as part of the 5,000-meter relay team and owns five World Cup medals in the 1,500-meter event, including a gold won in November in Kolomna, Russia.
