The Pirates meet Village Christian for the CIF Division 5 championship.

SANTA YNEZ, Calif. -

They pitch well, they hit the cover off the ball, they flash the leather and oh yeah Santa Ynez High School baseball wins, almost always.

The Pirates are hoping to cap off the best season in program history with its first CIF Southern Section title. Santa Ynez plays Village Christian of Sun Valley on Saturday at 1 p.m. at UC Riverside for the division 5 championship.

Santa Ynez enters the game 28-1, the win total is a program record. Sophomore Zach Torra is scheduled to start on Saturday and he is 10-0 on the year.

The Pirates have five players that have appeared in at least 25 games that are all hitting over .400, led by junior Kyle Von Tillow at .449.

All this and their best player, senior Thomas Rowan has been sidelined after getting hurt in the very first game of the season. Rowan is expected to play at UCSB next year.

Village Christian is 22-8 on the year and junior lefty Chris Davidson is expected to pitch on Saturday.

"They immediately just became part of the family," said Henning. "They were very friendly with all the guests we had coming over."

But things changed when Daisy and Duke got loose. They liked chasing cats.

"Dogs are pack animals and that is their default instinct," said Henning. "If they are bonded or litter mates, it intensifies that. They would get out of the confines of our house or yard and this instinct would come to the surface."
