The Minnesota Twins announced Monday that general manager Terry Ryan was diagnosed with a treatable form of cancer.

Ryan will not be with the team for the start of spring training so he can focus on treatment and recovery.

The club said a lump in Ryan's neck was discovered by the team physician during a routine annual physical. The subsequent biopsy revealed squamous cell carcinoma.

Ryan said in a statement that further tests showed the cancer appeared to be confined to his neck and has not spread. He said he was told the cancer is treatable and he is optimistic about returning to good health "in the near future."

"We are grateful for the many friends and colleagues who have sent their well wishes and support throughout this challenging time," Ryan said. "It's my intention to see you back at the ballpark as soon as possible."

Ryan started treatment at the Mayo Clinic and at Minnesota Oncology.
