Ellen DeGeneres made Twitter history Sunday night, tweeting a celebrity-filled selfie while hosting the Academy Awards that quickly became the most retweeted tweet of all time.
Twitter announced the photo had won the most retweeted crown even before the Academy Awards broadcast ended. As of Monday morning, it had been retweeted more than 2.6 million times.
The photo was accompanied by a message that made note of the occasion.
DeGeneres' tweet unseated this image of President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama as the most shared of all time. This image was 2012's most retweeted tweet and was also one of the most retweeted in 2013.
It simply carried the caption, "Four more years." The tweet ultimately received more than 780,000 retweets.
The third most retweeted tweet of 2013 was from a member of the band One Direction, Niall Horan (second from right).
The tweet, sent on his birthday, was retweeted by the band's legions of fans around the world.
The second most popular tweet of 2013 came after actor Paul Walker's recent death.
Walker's representatives confirmed that the 40-yera-old actor died in a car accident on Nov. 30, 2013.
The number one tweet for 2013 was from actress Lea Michele, who sent out a tweet of appreciation following fellow Glee star Cory Monteith's drug overdose in July, 2013.
The tweet was simple and gracious.
Monteith and Michele were a couple both on and off-screen. Moneith was found dead in a Vancouver hotel room at the age of 31 on July 13 following several rehab attempts and years of struggles with addictions.
Coming in right behind the Obama re-election tweet, the second most retweeted tweet of 2012 came from Justin Bieber, who was saying goodbye to 6-year-old Avalanna Routh, a Bieber fan who died of brain cancer in September 2012.
More than 220,000 Bieber fans honored Avalanna by sharing the tweet.
In 2011, the most retweeted tweet came from fast-food chain Wendy's, which was trying to raise money for foster children.
The tweet got close to 222,000 retweets.
The most shared tweet of 2010 came courtesy of comedian Stephen Colbert, who was satirizing the response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico
The June 2010 tweet garnered more than 41,000 retweets.
