Fourteen of the finest young (15-18 years) water polo players in Montenegro are visiting Santa Barbara this week to train and compete with members of the Santa Barbara Water Polo Club and other select teams in the area.
Mirco Vicevic, a gold medalist with the Montenegro team in the 1988 Olympics, will represent the Montenegro youth team. Montenegro fields one of the top teams in the world with consistently strong finishes in the Olympic games, World Championships, FINA World League and European Championships. It is likely that a number of these young players visiting Santa Barbara will compete at that level in the future.
The Santa Barbara Premier Water Polo Club and the Santa Barbara-Kotor Sister City Committee are hosting the visit. The Santa Barbara - Kotor Sister City Committee has sent youth water polo teams to Montenegro in 2012 and 2014 and this will be the first time a team from Montenegro will come to Santa Barbara.
The Santa Barbara Premier Water Polo Club is represented by Ian Wood and coached by Ryan McMillen, assistant coach of the UCSB Water Polo Team. Both men have been instrumental in forging this relationship between the water polo associations in Santa Barbara and Montenegro.
